Project Description
“Memory and Time: Labor and Cultural History” is an immersive virtual reality (VR) tour of NY-based artist Joyce Kozloff’s site-specific installation at the Federal Courthouse in Greenville, South Carolina.
Commissioned by the Everson Museum of Art, this VR tour will be a highlight in the 2025 retrospective exhibition of Kozloff’s work.
The virtual tour showcases part of the 17 large-scale glass mosaic and ceramic tile panels within the courthouse, each chronicling the region’s textile history.
VR was the ideal medium to expand the reach of this artwork to a broad audience, given the courthouse is only accessible to those with court-related business.

Key Experience Features
- Room-scale virtual recreation of the Federal Courthouse with Kozloff’s installation.
- Mixed Reality (MR) mode at the start allows them to get comfortable with the headset while still seeing their surroundings. Once ready, they can press the Start button to transition into the fully immersive experience.
- Users explore the panels with Kozloff as their virtual guide, getting up close to view intricate details and using a virtual balcony to view higher panels.
- Hand tracking simplifies the experience for both users and museum staff. This choice made interactions more intuitive and eliminated the need to manage controllers and batteries.
- The on-rails tour guides users through the panels in a sequential order. This ensures that the narrative unfolds smoothly and is easy to follow for a non-tech-savvy audience.
- Captions are available to ensure accessibility, providing an inclusive experience for the hearing impaired or those who prefer to read along.
- A chapters menu is implemented for advanced users who want to jump chapters within the tour experience.
